(I made this film because I myself wanted to better understand Singapore. I wanted to understand how we became who we are by addressing what was banished and unspoken for. Perhaps what remains could be the essence of us today. I was also hoping that the film would open up a national conversation to allow us to understand ourselves as a nation better too.)(见:https://wangruirong.wordpress.com/2014/09/12/%e6%98%9f%e5%9b%bd%e6%81%8b%e5%bd%b1%e7%89%87%e5%af%bc%e6%bc%94%e5%85%bc%e5%88%b6%e4%bd%9c%e8%80%85%ef%bc%9a%e9%99%88%e5%bd%ac%e5%bd%ac%e5%b0%8f%e5%a7%90%e4%b8%ad%e8%8b%b1%e6%96%87/)

Rachel Zeng

When the idea to charter buses to FFF JB first popped into my head, it was an instant reaction to MDA’s ban of “To Singapore, with Love”. Things moved from just being an intention to real action。
I have to thank those who have taken me seriously enough to invest their time and money in making this a reality. Due to the nature of my job, it was not possible for me to be making calls to bus companies during the day, so thank you to Jialiang for doing it to help kickstart the beginning of having the idea becoming a reality.
Thank you as well, to the generous donor who sponsored 3 of the buses. Without him, we might end up having to collect a fee for the transportation – an amount which I know might deter many from attending.
Also, a great big thanks to the organisers who went out of their way to accomodate us by shifting the screening to a larger room. The room was packed, and the estimation of 50 Singaporean attendees as was initially reported by the Straits Times proved that they need to work on their number sense, and seriously begin to consider reporting facts.
I also feel really honoured to be on the same bus with many from the old Left and their friends. Special thanks to Geok Choo for helping to co-ordinate this group. Many of them 在suffered detention without trial during the 60s while doing their bit for a country they so love.
Throughout the journey, I did not see any single bit of malice in them. All I saw was a group of pioneers whose contributions were villainies and forgotten, but whose hearts and minds are as attached to the affairs of this country as before.
I feel terrible that I was unable to secure tickets for more of them as they should all be given the opportunity to witness their side of the story being made into a film before it is too late (reality: they are in their 70s and 80s). They should have been entitled the first priority but since the handling of ticket reservations was not in my hands, I was not able to do so. I do apologise sincerely, and I will do my very best to acquire permission from the film maker to hold a private screening just for them. Yes this will take some time and there will be obstacles, but I hope to overcome them

Roy Ngerng Yi Ling:

to Johor Bahru to watch ‘To Singapore with Love’ today, the film banned by MDA. It is very touching watching the film when you hear stories of Singaporeans who had to flee Singapore because the authorities wanted to arrest them.

Yet, they are ordinary Singaporeans who fought in student unions, labour unions and the opposition, who were forced to step down, and many arrested. The 1960s and 1970s saw many innocent Singaporeans arrested and detained without trial, simply for fighting for a Singapore they love.
In the film, many of the exiles wanted to come back to Singapore because they were proud to be Singaporeans and wanted to come back to see their family and friends, but they were not allowed back, and were forced to give up their citizenship.
You hear them share their stories and you understand the passion they have, and why they fought. And how this passion was driven out of Singaporeans either by them being driven out of Singapore or by being arrested for no valid reason.
I watched and teared, when you hear of how much they wanted to do what they can for Singapore, but could not. One of the exiled Singaporeans said, “I am sorry I did not do enough for Singapore”, to fight for us.
But they did. They fought, and then they had to flee Singapore, but still they fought for us from outside. It was not that they did not do enough. It was that they could not.
The PAP controlled the Internal Security Department, the media and took control of the student union and labour unions. They were forced out. Today, Singaporeans are able to use social media to fight back. PAP wants us to believe what they tell us but no, we fight back.
Dear Singaporeans today, other Singaporeans had fought for our freedoms in the earlier years of Singapore’s history. They fought hard. But they could not achieve what they wanted to do. Don’t let what they did go to waste. They fought with heart, with passion and with spirit, for Singapore, for us.
Let’s show our passion, let’s bring our spirit out. Let’s finish what they started. They did what they could.
Today, let us continue what they started. Let us bring freedom and hope to our country, to allow our people to flourish and to regain our lives. We are fighting for Singapore, for our future, for the future of Singapore and Singaporeans.
Remember our pioneers. Remember who we are. Remember our spirit, our passion and our beliefs。
let them rise from within us, and let us fight for the lives we want, for ourselves.

Function 8’s statement on the ban against Tan Pin Pin’s documentary, “To Singapore With Love”
The history of a nation can aim to be accurate only if various and divergent voices are heard. In recent years, books like “Escape from the Lion’s Paw”, “The 1963 Operation Coldstore in Singapore”, “We Remember”, “That We May Dream Again” and “Youth on Trial” have added other perspectives to the memory of a very significant period in Singapore’s nation-building.
Tan Pin Pin’s documentary film, “To Singapore With Love”, on Singapore’s political exiles who fled the country, some as long as 50 years ago, adds another dimension to this on-going writing of our history.
Function 8 is deeply concerned that the Media Development Authority has banned this film from being screened in Singapore. Banning of intellectual products is far from being the hallmark of a first-world country; it smacks of medieval ignorance and naivety. Where is the spirit of conversation so much hailed and lauded as our country is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her birth?
We call on the authorities to allow an honest appraisal of our history, so that we can develop as an intelligent nation, not just in hard-wire terms, but in the heart and soul of our people.

而且还打破全世界的记录:被定为:任何等级均不允许!(Not allow for all rating 简称:NAR)。

(’To Singapore With Love’ screened at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival and has won multiple awards all over the world. It has received high praise from filmmakers, critics and festival programmers. Many commentators have described it as essential viewing for all Singaporeans. Banning the film will only reinforce the view that our government is trying to limit discussion around our very own history.)”(见网址:https://www.facebook.com/notes/filmcommunity-sg/filmmakers-arts-communitys-statement-re-mdas-ban-on-tan-pin-pins-to-singapore-wi/1494957707417453)

(I was making a video about Singapore’s coastline from afar. In the process of researching the idea of being outside, I stumbled upon Escape from the Lion’s Paw (2012), a book of first-person accounts by Singapore political exiles, people who remain outside the country, but not by choice. I decided to interview one of them in Malaysia. I was so moved by her account that I decided to change focus and To Singapore, with Love was born. )”

FILM BANNED: REAL THREAT OR JUST WOUNDED PRIDE
http://www.negarakita.com/Post-1073705-Film+banned%3A+Real+threat+or+just+wounded+pride
http://sg.nanyangpost.com/2014/09/13.html

Who is threatening Singapore’s ‘national security’?——by Tan Wah Piow(中英文对照)

星国恋</a

Who is threatening Singapore’s ‘national security’?

To Singapore, With Love

by Tan Wah Piow
How very strange. Despite the billions spent on military hardware to protect the island state, Singapore is apparently so fragile that it has to to ban an internationally acclaimed 70-minute film featuring interviews with exiles in order to “protect the national security and stability of Singapore”.
Before I venture further, allow me to declare my interests. I am one of the six who is featured in Tan Pin Pin’s To Singapore, With Love; and therefore by implication, is alleged to have undermined the “national security” of Singapore.
My views of past events which led to my exile in London, and my current views on the PAP are already in the public domain. In particular, they appear in more cogent forms in the following books: Escape from the Lion’s Paw (2012), Smokescreens & Mirrors (2012); Let the People Judge (1987); and Frame-Up (1987) which are available in Singapore.
If those books and publications did not undermine the national security of Singapore in the last 24 months, why all of a sudden, my images and words in the 70-min film become a national security threat. This question relates equally to my fellow-exiles in London Dr Ang Swee Chai and Ho Juan Thai, who also appear in the film, and whose accounts of their exile are also published in Escape from the Lion’s Paw.
The film also features the lives and views of former leftwing Barisan Sosialis assemblymen Chan Sun Wing and Wong Soon Fong, and some of their comrades who now reside in Southern Thailand. They fled Singapore in the 1960s to avoid persecution, and later joined the communist guerilla movement at the border area. Since the 1989 peace accord between Malaysia and the Communist Party of Malaya, they have settled in southern Thailand.
The objection to the screening, as expressed by the Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim is equally perplexing.
Yaacob Ibrahim said, “…individuals who have chosen to leave and remain outside Singapore, and refused to account for their past actions, should not enjoy a public platform to purvey distorted and untruthful accounts to mislead the public, absolve themselves or deny their past actions.” Yaacob Ibrahim did not appear to be aware that the late Chin Peng, secretary-general of the Communist Party of Malaya, had in the 1990s visited Singapore on two occasions. He met with Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong, and addressed academic seminars, and his interviews were subsequently published. If Chin Peng’s visits to Singapore, and his autobiography His Side of History, a book which is available in Singapore, did not undermine the security of Singapore, how could the images and words of the associates of Chin Peng do so?
It is blatantly clear that by no stretch of imagination could a film of this nature be said to undermine the security of Singapore. The argument put up by the Media Development Authority, followed immediately by the stamp of approval of the Cabinet Minister, is an insult to the intelligence of the population of Singapore. Consequently, the current outcry is predictable.
Yet, why did these astronomically highly paid, supposedly highly intelligent individuals, some highly senior army personnel, make or acquiesce to such a decision which, to a common man, is either plainly foolish or extremely stupid? Why is the perverse assessment of security threat an affront to common sense?
The plain answer is that the powers that be can tolerate only one narrative for the history of Singapore – the PAP story. The film sets out to present the lesser known aspect of the Singapore political fabric, and in the process, inadvertently presents an alternative version of history. A well crafted film, which, To Singapore, With Love, is one, becomes a potent challenge to the established views.
To ban the film would be an infringement to Article 14 of the Singapore Constitution which protects the freedom of expression. The only way to circumvent Article 14 of the Constitution is to invoke the security threat mantra. This would be implausible in any democratic country where the rule of law interprets “security threat” only in the strictest and narrowest sense.
But Singapore is a different story. That is why the Cabinet has to be very highly paid, because our ministers and Prime Minister are very clever.
But the people are not stupid either. One day, the people will know who is the serial abuser of the Singapore Constitution.

Why MDA? by Teo Soh Lung

To Singapore With Love, directed by Ms Tan Pin Pin is about Home, the longing for home to be more precise. The film is not about the MCP or a call to join the MCP which no longer exists. Neither does the film glorifies the deeds of the MCP. For the MDA to issue a “Not allowed for all ratings” or “Banned” in short, is disappointing and irrational.

MDA claims: “The individuals in the film have given distorted and untruthful accounts of how they came to leave Singapore and remain outside Singapore. A number of these self-professed “exiles” were members of, or had provided support to, the proscribed Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) … two of the individuals in the film conveniently omitted mentioning the criminal offences which they remain liable for, like tampering with their Singapore passports or absconding from National Service.” See http://www.mda.gov.sg/AboutMDA/NewsReleasesSpeechesAndAnnouncements/Pages/NewsDetail.aspx?news=639.

In the penultimate paragraph of its press release, MDA said: “The individuals featured in the film gave the impression that they are being unfairly denied their right to return to Singapore. They were not forced to leave Singa¬pore, nor are they being prevented from returning. The Government has made it clear that it would allow former CPM members to return to Singapore if they agree to be interviewed by the authorities on their past activities to resolve their cases. Criminal offences will have to be accounted for in accordance with the law.”

It is sad that a film is banned just because the officials dislike what the interviewees said. Surely, a detailed press statement from the government is sufficient to rebut the claims of the interviewees. Further, the government controls the media and it is capable of churning out more films like “The Days of Rage” to counter the narratives of the interviewees who are now in their 80s.

The government have till today, failed to explain why after the September 1963 election, it had deemed it necessary to arrest so many people including three elected MPs of the Barisan Sosialis and imprisoned them for years under the ISA. It was because of the arrests together with hundreds of others under the ISA that year, that elected MPs Wong Soon Fong and Chan Sun Wing who appeared in the film became political exiles. They had put their heart and soul helping Lee Kuan Yew win the 1959 election. They had stood for election and won in September 1963 but had been denied their rightful seats in the legislative assembly. They and others, including He Jin, a prolific writer, told their stories in a calm and uncomplaining manner. Their love for the Singapore is evident from what they say and do today. They follow Singapore’s progress closely, reading newspapers daily and watching news on television.

“To Singapore With Love” is not just about the politicians and members of the CPM who left Singapore soon after Operation Cold Store and the general election in September 1963. It is much more. Indeed, the “star” in the film and the most reflective interviewee is Dr Ang Swee Chai who touches our hearts with personal stories of courage and sacrifice of her late husband, Francis Khoo, a young lawyer who fled Singapore when his friends were arrested in February 1977. They were accused of being “Euro-Communists.” Dr Ang and Francis were married just two weeks before the arrests. Dr Ang herself was imprisoned and left Singapore to join her husband after her release. Legally, she has not committed any crime and should be able to return to Singapore without conditions or being subjected to the humiliation of giving statements of her past. But she has not been able to obtain a Singapore passport. In the interview, Dr Ang reflected on the hardship that befell her family and that of Francis. Francis’ mother missed her son and wished that he could return. But upon receiving a letter from Francis explaining why he had rejected the thought of returning because he didn’t want to “squeal” on his friends, she accepted the fate that she would not be able to see him. Like many other exiles, both Francis and Swee Chai were unable to return home to visit their parents when they became seriously ill and died.

MDA’s comment on the crimes of the exiles, in particular, the reference to Tan Wah Piow’s escape from enlistment after serving a one year prison sentence on a false charge for “rioting” is interesting. Many Singaporean males have failed to enlist. Surely the penalty cannot be 40 years of forced exile and the loss of one’s citizenship by the use of a law enacted chiefly to deprive him of citizenship in 1985.

Finally, the film touches on the lunatic chase of Ho Juan Thai, a Nantah graduate and former president of the Nanyang University Students’ Union. He was a candidate for the Workers’ Party in the 1976 general election. He left Singapore suddenly when the secret police went after him for something he allegedly said during the election rallies. He had to use up his parents’ life savings in order to escape. Like Francis, he too had to do menial work in London. The film shows him with his two young children and wife. He spoke of his life, marrying late and wishing his elder son could return to Singapore to do national service!

Singapore will be 50 next year. Singaporeans have matured and deserve to see this film depicting people who were active in attempting to shape Singapore during their youth. Let’s hope the MDA will reconsider its decision should an appeal be lodged

STATEMENT BY TAN PIN PIN
Director and Producer of “To Singapore, with Love”

To Singapore with Love (2013) was slated to screen with my other films Invisible City (2007) and Singapore GaGa (2005) at the end of September 2014, in a triple-bill presented by National University of Singapore (NUS) Museum, an institution that I have had a long working relationship with in relation to my previous films.

Now the screenings will not take place.

I am very disappointed by the MDA decision to ban it — for myself, and also what it means for Singapore. Like many of my other films, To Singapore, with Love took shape organically. I was making a video about Singapore’s coastline from afar. Like my other films mentioned above, this film is a portrait of Singapore; unlike the others, this film is shot entirely outside the country, in the belief that we can learn something about ourselves by adopting, both literally and figuratively, an external view.

For this film, I traveled to England, Malaysia and Thailand to interview the exiles to find out how they have lived their lives away from Singapore. Some have not been back for more than 50 years. They talk about why they left, but they mostly talk about their lives today and their relationship with Singapore. They show us the new lives they have created for themselves. One shows us around his noodle-making factory, we visit the law firm of another and play with the children of yet another exile. We also attend the funeral of one of them. Finally, we observe a family reunion that takes place in Johor Baru, the twinkling lights of Singapore a short distance away. The focus is on their everyday lives. These exiles all have different ideological positions and are of different ages; some are communists, others are activists from the Christian Left, yet others are socialist politicians or former student activists. But their feelings for Singapore is intense and heartfelt, albeit sometimes ambivalent, even after so long away. Those feelings (more than the circumstances of their exile, or even the historical “truth” that led to such exile) are what my film predominantly focuses on, because I feel that many viewers might relate to those feelings.

I made this film because I myself wanted to better understand Singapore. I wanted to understand how we became who we are by addressing what was banished and unspoken for. Perhaps what remains could be the essence of us today. I was also hoping that the film would open up a national conversation to allow us to understand ourselves as a nation better too.

I am therefore very disappointed that my film is banned. By doing this, MDA is taking away an opportunity for us Singaporeans see it and to have a conversation about it and our past that this film could have started or contributed to. It is vital for us to have that conversation on our own terms, especially on the eve of our 50th birthday. We need to be trusted to be able to find the answers to questions about ourselves, for ourselves.

It is my deepest regret that we cannot have such a conversation here today. That conversation did start when some Singaporeans saw it at film festivals overseas. Some of the reactions include; “Tender and searching” “Extremely moving and thought-provoking” and “A Must see”. Now, the irony that a film about Singapore exiles is now exiled from Singapore as well – this is not something I ever wanted or hoped for.

I hope to be able to show it in Singapore one day, and may re-submit for a rating in the future.
